In March, we wrote about the results of a study suggesting that there may be a correlation between incidents of domestic violence and NFL football losses. Specifically, researchers said that a home-team loss could result in a 10 percent jump in domestic violence 911 calls within 1-2 hours after the end of the game.
Thankfully, Packer fans have not had many opportunities to test this research here in Wisconsin. After winning the Super Bowl last season, the Packers have had a nearly perfect record this year. Unfortunately, the team’s first loss last weekend was blamed for sparking an alleged domestic violence incident by a Wisconsin woman.
The alleged attacks occurred in a Grand Chute hotel room while the woman watched the game with her husband and 11-year-old daughter. According to police, the woman had been drinking and attacked her daughter in apparent reaction to the disappointing Packers loss. She allegedly choked the young girl and asked: “Do you want to die?”
Her husband later reported that the woman broke a lamp and attempted to take a swing at him.
In addition to misdemeanor counts of bail jumping and disorderly conduct, the woman was charged with felony child abuse when she recently appeared in Outagamie County Court.
Charges of domestic violence often come with serious consequences. But because of the complex dynamics of family life and the fact that emotions can run high, the details listed on a police report may not accurately tell the whole story.
A qualified criminal defense attorney may be able to help you sort out the details of a domestic violence charge and make sure you are represented fairly and accurately.
